The Wood Collective is a Christchurch workshop with a simple focus: making beautiful, practical bookshelves for children.
Our bookshelves are designed around the way kids actually interact with books. Instead of hiding their favourites away with only the spines showing, our front-facing design puts the covers on display — easy to see, easy to reach, and ready to be picked up.
What began as part of a wider range of children's furniture has become the product we believe in most. So we've chosen to focus on it.
Why front-facing?
For young children, a book cover is far more recognisable than a title printed along a spine.
A front-facing bookshelf turns their books into part of the room. Favourite stories are visible, children can browse for themselves, and putting a book back doesn't need to be complicated.
It's a simple idea, and it's at the heart of every bookshelf we make.

Every Wood Collective bookshelf is made here in Christchurch, New Zealand.
From machining the individual components through to finishing and preparing each order, we make our bookshelves ourselves rather than importing a finished product and putting our name on it.
That gives us control over the details that matter: clean machining, consistent fit, a quality finish and a bookshelf we're happy to send into someone else's home.
We've made and shipped our bookshelves to families throughout New Zealand, and every one starts here in our Christchurch workshop.

Children's rooms aren't all the same, and neither are their book collections.
Our current range runs from compact 2 Tier bookshelves through to larger 6 Tier designs, with different width options available across the range.
Our focus is on making thoughtful children's bookshelves that work well in real homes, from small reading corners and bedrooms to playrooms and larger book collections.
The result is a simple range that makes it easier to find a bookshelf that fits your space, whether it's beside a bed, in a reading corner, across a playroom wall or holding a growing collection of favourite stories.
